Please Register ASAP for The Summer Picnic at Faun Lake!

Can you believe how fast time is going?  It’s now July and as you know, Saturday, July 30th is our Summer Picnic at Faun Lake.  We need all those who plan on attending the Summer Picnic at Faun Lake to Register on the site as soon as possible because we will be buying hot dogs, hamburgers, rolls, plates, knives and such so we need to know an exact count of how many people will be attending this year so we can have enough food for everyone who will be there.  We will be shopping for the food the week of the event so please make sure you are registered prior to Monday, July 25th.

We also need to know who will be attending because as you know, it is being held at my summer home and in order to get through the gate to our property you must be on the guest list that will be given to the front office for them to let you in.  Don’t be locked out of all the fun!

You can Register for the Summer Picnic by CLICKING HERE.

Thank you to those that have already registered and we’ll see you at Faun Lake!

Meet Our New Event Coordinators!

The Buffalo Hiking Group Adds Two New Event Coordinators!

If you have been on some of our recent events you have probably met them already but I will give you a brief introduction.

Rainee VanNatter

Rainee has been a long time member of The Buffalo Hiking Group as well as Buffalo Orienteering.  She is an avid outdoorswoman who has many interests including hiking, orienteering, geocaching and bicycling.  She really is a master with the gps and can be seen dashing in and out of the forest in search of caches and orienteering controls.  Rainee has organized and led quite a few events already with many more yet to be planned.

Gloria Lupkin
In Her Own Words.

I decided to jump into this with two feet for the fitness aspect of it. I started a serious workout schedule about four years ago that I continue to this day (with some modifications), and although I have greatly improved my health, some aspects of my workout regimen stopped working for me. The weight training and running were taking a toll on my joints. So one Saturday I skipped body pump and went for a pretty fast paced hike and I felt as though I had run a 5K, but without pain. I felt great! So I have changed my motto from “no pain no gain” to “all gain no pain”.

A little about myself…..

I am a native of Buffalo and live in the south towns with my husband and son. I work part time for an education institution in Buffalo. I have always loved outdoor activities and have been on some amazing hikes. I have hiked the Grand Canyon, Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, Watkins Glen, several trails in the Adirondacks and Letchworth State Park and Zoar Valley. I have also hiked a few trails in Canada, Whirlpool State Park and farther north around Lake Simcoe. I also enjoy rafting and kayaking.

I plan on coordinating mid week hikes primarily in the south towns, not to exceed two hours in length. I will also assist the other coordinators with their hikes when needed. I want to give members of the Buffalo Hiking Group an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors during the week.

The Buffalo Hiking Group welcomes our two new event coordinators and thanks them for volunteering their time to offer members some additional events during the month!

Buffalo Hiking Group March Events Bulletin

Spring Is On Its Way!

What a winter we’ve had here in Western New York!  It certainly has been a true winter, unlike many of the past!

The Buffalo Hiking Group certainly kept busy over these colder months with snowshoeing, hiking, The Powder Keg Festival, Happy Hours and The Shamrock Run but we are definitely ready to welcome back the warm weather!  As the weather improves you will see many more events being planned as it is a lot easier to navigate a lot of the areas when there isn’t a boatload of snow to maneuver around!

If you are out hiking as the seasons transition, remember to be very careful where are you hiking as there may be water underneath what looks to be packed snow.  Always hike with someone as well just in case something should happen!

We thank you all for your ideas on places to hike, keep the ideas coming because we will be planning a lot of hikes this year!

See you at the next event!

2011 Buffalo MS Walk

Each year, The Buffalo Hiking Group participates in the Buffalo MS Walk to help raise money for research to find a cure for MS.  MS affects many people and there is a good chance that you know someone with MS.  Maybe a family member?  A friend?  A co-worker?  Without volunteers who participate in fund raising efforts, the research it will take to find a cure for MS will be light years away so it is very important that we do what we can to speed that process up.

Can you help?

National Trails Day 2011

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED OR THIS EVENT WILL BE CANCELED

As a member of The American Hiking Society (founders of National Trails Day), The Buffalo Hiking Group believes in giving back and helping Mother Nature as much as possible so in an effort to do just that we will be holding a Trail Clean-Up and Educational Day on June 4th 2011 to celebrate National Trails Day.  The location for this event is still to be determined but we are looking for suggestions.  If you have any, please email them tochris@buffalohiking.com.

The activities we would like to run are:

1)  Litter and Garbage pick-up on the trails.

2)  Eduction on the principles of “Leave No Trace”.

3)  Group led trail hikes.

4)  Kids Outdoor Safety Education.

5)  Adults Outdoor Safety Education.

We are going to need volunteers to help out in all of these areas. Is there any area where you think you can help?  Please email Chris at chris@buffalohiking.com and let him know in what area you would like to help.

Summer Cook-Out & Family Hike at Faun Lake!

Chris & Jen Henning invite you out to their summer home at Faun Lake for a day of hiking, swimming, hot-tubbing, kayaking and cooking out!
The last event was a great time and so many people brought so many wonderful dishes to pass! Faun Lake is a private eco-friendly community with miles of hiking trails, 2 huge lakes for kayaking & fishing, swimming pool, beach, hot tub and playgrounds for kids.  It is located in the Wyoming County town of Bliss and is about 45 minutes from Buffalo.
We will have everyone meet at 11am at the parking area by the beach, from there we can take the food back to the cabin while we hike.  We’ll take a couple mile hike on the nature trails then come back and fire up the grills at the park next to the beach for lunch.  After lunch you can make use of the swimming pool, hot tub, bocce courts, beach or whatever you would like to do.  I am sure there will be food enough left so if you want to make an entire day of it and cook up dinner you can as well.  For those who would like to stay later, bring some marshmallows for roasting over a camp-fire at Chris & Jen’s cabin.

Shamrock Run Anyone?

So I’m thinking of participating in the Shamrock Run this year.  I wouldn’t be running in it since my hip doesn’t allow for it and I am in no way in shape enough to run 8k.  If members of The Buffalo Hiking Group or just a bunch of friends are interested in participating in it as well maybe we can all walk in it together as a group.  I have always went down for the party after and it is always such a good time.  The entrance fee goes to a good cause as well.
